Mateso's life was forever changed after being raped by armed men in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. She got pregnant as a result of the rape, and is now facing the rejection of her husband and community.

In many cultures, victims of sexual violence are stigmatized. They not only suffer the trauma of rape, but also the pain of losing their families and livelihoods. With the support of a local counsellor, Mateso is receiving psychological treatment and learning life skills to build a future for herself and her unborn child. However, rejection from her community has made recovery an uphill battle.
